How to organize Claude chats into folders

Updated

Claude's own tool is Projects: free accounts can create up to five, and a chat joins one through Add to project in its dropdown menu. For plain folders across Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini, an extension such as Chatshelf adds them.

Add to Edge, freeFirefox: in review

Chatshelf runs in Microsoft Edge and Firefox on desktop. No account.

Claude’s own answer: Projects

Claude groups chats into Projects. Per Anthropic’s help page, they are available to everyone, and a free account can create up to five. To file a chat you already have, open the dropdown arrow next to its name, choose Add to project and search for the project. The same menu takes a chat out or moves it to a different project.

When Projects fit

A project suits chats that share material: the same files, the same instructions, one piece of work. If you want a drawer for loose chats, five projects run out quickly, and each site only knows its own chats.

Folders across sites

  1. Install Chatshelf and open claude.ai. A Chatshelf section appears above the chat list.
  2. Press + Folder, name it, and add a subfolder if you want one.
  3. Drag a chat onto the folder, or use Move to from the open chat.

The folders are labels kept in your browser. The chat stays where it is on Claude, and Claude’s own project list does not change. The same folders are available on ChatGPT and Gemini, and one search covers all three.

Limits to know

Free keeps up to 8 folders, subfolders included. Pro, at €29 for a year or €49 once, has no limit and adds auto-file rules. The folders do not show on your phone or in another browser. Chatshelf runs on Microsoft Edge today, and Firefox is in review. If you want it to do something else with Claude chats, the roadmap page takes suggestions.

Questions

Does Claude have folders?

Claude has Projects. Anthropic's help page says they are open to all users, including free accounts, and that free users can create a maximum of five (support.claude.com, read on 6 October 2026).
